Finding Clarity in the Chaos: Why Life’s Tests Are Your Secret Weapon

I turned 33 this year. And while I’m pretty sure there’s a Busted song in there somewhere ("Though she may be thirty-three, that doesn’t bother me..."), I’m actually starting to feel genuinely comfortable in my own skin.

Don't get me wrong—it hasn't been a walk in the park. I’ve had my share of anxiety and extreme stress recently, including a traumatic allergic reaction while abroad that left me in a gruelling mental battle with everyday food. But looking back, I'm realising something vital: it’s those stressful moments and everyday tests that push us to reach the next level.

Think about it this way. If you were a higher being designing a human destined for a meaningful life, you wouldn't give them an easy ride. You would test their honour, resilience, and honesty to forge a strong, pure heart. Life is meant to be challenging. The friction is what builds our character, shapes our personalities, and forces us to become the absolute best versions of ourselves.

Breaking Down the "Everything is Awful" Mentality

When everything feels heavy, it's easy to fall into a trap where you feel like your entire life is a mess. I was recently spiralling a bit myself until I found some inspiration on Pinterest: The Wheel of Life.

If you haven't seen one before, it’s a tool that breaks your life down into 10 to 12 distinct categories—like love, career, health, and environment—and asks you to rate each one out of 10.

What I love about this tool is how it dismantles the overwhelming "everything is shit" mentality. By isolating different areas, you quickly realise that your whole life isn't broken; you just have a few specific areas that need some TLC. It shifts you out of hopelessness and into targeted action.

For instance, I only rated my physical environment a 5/10. I’ve completely outgrown my flat, and dealing with our landlord is exhausting. But because the Wheel of Life helped me isolate that specific stressor, I didn't feel completely defeated. Instead, my husband and I are actively putting money aside for a house deposit. (You can read more about that here!) The current environment is rubbish, sure, but knowing we are actively building a future we're excited about changes the entire narrative. It’s a temporary stepping stone, not a permanent prison.

Over to You: Plot Your Map

We can't fix our lives in one giant, overwhelming swoop. But we can adjust them piece by piece, starting with honesty.

If you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like you're just wading through mud, I implore you to try this for yourself. Don't look at your life as one big, messy cloud. Break it down. Pinpoint exactly where the leak is so you can finally stop trying to patch the whole roof.

To make it easy for you, I’ve actually built a quick quiz to help you map out your own Wheel of Life and find your starting point.

Your Challenge Today: Take five minutes out of your day to take the quiz below. It will help you find the one area scoring the lowest, and suggest a single, tiny action you can take this week to move the needle.

Life is always going to throw us tests—whether it's an allergic reaction across the world or a landlord who won't fix the heating. But you are the architect of what happens next. Give the quiz a go, face your numbers, and let me know in the comments what your focus area is going to be!
