What My Friend’s Cancer Battle Taught Me About Living

We all have those moments where we catch ourselves playing the "what if" game, wondering if we’re on the right track, feeling a bit bogged down by the daily grind, or secretly wishing our lives looked a little different. I know I’ve certainly spent my fair share of time feeling sorry for myself, feeling like I should be further along or doing something bigger.
Then, life hands you a perspective shift you never saw coming.
Recently, I met up with my friend Leanne, someone I hadn't seen in a while. Leanne recently went through cancer treatment and underwent a double mastectomy.
On paper, that sounds like the setup for a heavy, dark, and uncomfortable conversation. But the reality couldn't have been further from it.
Sitting across from her, I wasn't filled with sadness, I was filled with hope.
Leanne radiated a grounded, unstoppable confidence. She looked incredible, with her soft regrowth of hair, a vibrant energy, and a genuine "can-do" attitude. Her treatment is heading in the right direction, but more than that, her spirit was completely intact. In fact, it was stronger.
It made me realise something powerful: Resilience isn't just about surviving the storm; it’s about how you choose to walk through it.
Think about popular writers writing on scrap paper in coffee shops while facing rock-bottom hardship, or everyday people who face severe health crises and suddenly stop waiting for "someday" to start living.
Terrible situations aren't something anyone wishes for, but watching someone step out of the fire stronger and more vibrant than before is deeply humbling. It forces you to look at your own life and ask: What am I waiting for?
Listening to Leanne lit a fire under me. It reminded me that we don't have time to squander our potential. I realised I am on the right path, I just needed to step up and own it. Right now, I’m editing my novel, exploring new creative avenues, and pouring my heart into growing this community. I finally feel like I’m part of something larger than myself.
My goal now? The next time I sit down with Leanne, after she's told me about her next big achievement, I want to look her in the eye and say, "I did it. I published the book. I chased the thing I was afraid of."
We shouldn't always need a wake-up call to start living fully, but when inspiration strikes, whether through a friend’s courage or a sudden moment of clarity, we owe it to ourselves to use it as fuel.
So, let's take that step together. What opportunities are sitting in front of you right now? What is one thing you can do today to add real value and purpose to your life? There will be something, I know it.
